Anomalous Coffee Machine is a free interactive fiction game by indie developer HoruBrain. You sit across from a mysterious girl and a strange coffee vending machine. You type any word — "coffee", "rain", "thunder" — and the machine brews it into a drink. Whatever happens next is the game. There is no score, no timer, and no game-over screen waiting to punish you. Just curiosity and a machine that always answers.
If you came here looking for what the game is, how to play it, and where to get it safely, you are in the right place. This guide covers everything: the gameplay, the versions, modding, and the official download links.

What is Anomalous Coffee Machine?
Think of it as part visual novel, part word experiment. The setup is simple: a girl, a coffee machine, and a text box. The machine is inspired by the SCP Foundation's famous SCP-294 — the coffee machine that dispenses anything you type. In HoruBrain's game, you type a word and the machine produces a cup of it. Type "coffee" and you get coffee. Type "ocean" and, well, you get the idea.
What makes it a game instead of a toy is that the machine reacts. Depending on the word, different events, transformations, and story scenes trigger. The current version has more than 730 discoverable words, over 680 transformations, and 100,000+ words of dialogue. Some words do nothing. Some change the girl. Some change you. Finding out which is which is the entire point.
There is deliberately no tutorial and no objective list. The developer's own description is basically: type a word, let her drink, see what happens. Players who enjoy experimenting, taking notes, and sharing discoveries with the community get the most out of it.
How to play
The loop takes about ten seconds to learn:
- Type a word into the machine's input box — any noun you can think of.
- A cup appears, filled with whatever the word described.
- Choose who drinks — the girl, or yourself.
- Watch what happens. Sometimes nothing. Sometimes a scene plays. Sometimes the story shifts.
That is the whole game. The depth comes from the word list: with 730+ supported words and hidden combinations, players spend hours testing ideas. Common starting words are everyday drinks and foods, then people branch into elements, concepts, and stranger ideas. The game tracks what you have discovered, so completionists can work toward finding every keyword.
If you get stuck, our beginner's guide walks through the first hour and explains how discovery works.
Versions: ACM 1, 2, and 3
HoruBrain has released three main entries, and they are easy to mix up:
- Anomalous Coffee Machine (1): the original. Free public builds on itch.io for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and browser. Still updated — version 1.4 arrived in September 2026.
- Anomalous Coffee Machine 2: the sequel, with a bigger word list, new transformations, and a "Safe Edition" variant. Available on itch.io and on Steam, which makes it the easiest version to install for most PC players.
- Anomalous Coffee Machine 3: the newest entry, released as a public demo. You play as a different character in a new setting, and you can now keep cups in an inventory, share them with neighbors, or even sell them in-game.
New players should start with the original — it is free, runs everywhere including your browser, and teaches you the concept in minutes. Our versions guide compares all three in detail.
Modding support
One reason the game has stayed alive since 2024 is official modding support. You can add your own words, transformations, and events, then share the mod on itch.io. The community has built word packs that extend the discovery list well beyond the base game. If you have ever wanted a specific word to do something, modding is how you make it happen — see our modding guide for the basics.
Where to download (official links only)
Get the game from the developer's own pages — never from random re-upload sites, which may bundle malware with free games:
- itch.io: horubrain.itch.io — all versions, all platforms, free public builds.
- Steam: search "Anomalous Coffee Machine 2" — the sequel, with automatic updates.
- Patreon: HoruBrain's Patreon hosts the newest supporter builds before they go public.
The Android build is around 770 MB and the desktop builds are similar, so use Wi-Fi for the download. The browser version needs no install at all — it runs from the itch.io page.
System requirements
The game is light by modern standards. Any Windows, macOS, or Linux machine from the last decade runs it, and the Android build works on most modern phones (Android 7.0+). The browser version works in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. No account, launcher, or always-online connection is required for the itch.io builds; the Steam version needs the Steam client.

Does anyone know if the browser version saves progress? I played for an hour at work (don't tell my boss) and I'm scared to close the tab.
The concept sounded dumb when my friend described it. Then I lost 3 hours to it. The word hunting is genuinely addictive.
the 'drink it yourself' tip is so real. i played a whole week only letting her drink and missed like half the game
Stuck at 180 words. The category method from this guide actually works — cleared all drinks and elements last night.
typed 'thunderstorm' on my first try and the machine just sat there. felt personal lol. this game is weird in the best way
